Goodyear Long Distance Tyre Test

As an independent tyre retailer, Bob Jane T-Marts runs unconventional tyre testing from time to time. Combining their knowledge of the quality brands in stock and experience of Australia’s diverse terrains, the Bob Jane T-Marts team set off on an epic journey to assess a 2 popular all-terrain tyres from Goodyear in efforts to provide feedback and information to their stores for when they make recommendations to best suit their customer’s needs.

In late October 2022, when wet weather rolled across the country, the Bob Jane T-Marts team took a pair of identical Isuzu D-Max LSU 4x4 vehicles on a long-distance tyre test journey from Melbourne to Perth. The estimated 3500km adventure would include a route that covered as much off-road driving that can be packed into a 5-day trip. In addition to assessing the tyre capability in various terrains, the plan was to test noise levels and fuel consumption between the two vehicles when running different all-terrain tyres pattern across the same conditions at the same time. The tyres to be tested would be the Goodyear Wrangler Silenttrac, against a more aggressive all-terrain tyre, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac.

The crew had to make sure that the tyres were not just driven on the tarmac during the journey, but to include various off-road tracks that covered gravel, beach sand and that illusive red dust the Australian outback is well known for. The camping, the sights and the scenery were all just an added benefit of taking on a long-distance trip though Australia.

The tour started at the Bob Jane T-Marts National Support Office in Port Melbourne. The destination was the 4WD and Adventure Show at McCallum Park in Perth. The crew prepared all the vehicles, locked in the destination in the Hema HX-2 Navigator and headed west.

As prepared as the convoy could be at the start of the journey, the weather added a complexity that would make the bitumen driving somewhat more adventurous than long hours on the black top would normally allow, but on the flip side would create great off-road adventures that added a layer of dirt to the cars that would turn heads as we headed into the 4WD and Adventure Show and parked the cars between recently detailed 4WD’s on other stands. On arrival at the destination in Perth.

Both Isuzu’s safely and comfortably concluded the tyre testing and it was time to look into some of the feedback and results: Comparing fuel receipts, comfort and vehicle’s odometers the Bob Jane T-Marts crew found that both Goodyear Wrangler Silenttrac and Duratrac were capable in all terrains presented throughout the tour.

In particularly, the Goodyear Wrangler Silenttrac demonstrated the best of both off-road and on-road driving, recognising why this tyre pattern has become an increasingly popular choice with customers. The team found the Silenttrac displayed strength and confidence on dirt roads whilst delivering an all-round quiet and comfortable ride. The Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac offered more consistency and aggression whilst off-road on some of South Australia’s beaches. Dispersing water efficiently on a wet terrain due to the bold tread design and traction technology. The tyre handled better in wet conditions, elongating tread life resulting in improved mileage and value for money.
