The Yokohama Geolandar A/T XD G017 is the latest release from the popular premium tyre brand aimed at creating a niche in the complex landscape of 4x4 tyres suitable for Australian off-road conditions. We took a set into the Victorian High Country mountains to gain some insight into how this new tyre will perform in Australian conditions.
The G017 has an aggressive tread pattern, and you can see the subtle design cues the tyre has taken from both the popular Geolandar X-AT G016 and the Geolandar MT G003, which is where this tyre will be sandwiched between in the landscape of Yokohama’s product offering.
The G017 boasts a durable construction, hence the inclusion of “XD” in the name. The tyre is designed to provide outstanding performance and reliability in off-road conditions and is pitched locally by Yokohama as a tyre “ideal for commercial applications in harsh environments like mine sites”. We recon it will develop a following amongst hard core 4WD enthusiasts as it grows in popularity.
The perfect place to put the new G017 to the test would be the Victorian High Country mountains, where we had the opportunity to run them through some seriously rugged and demanding terrains. From steep rocky trails to water crossings to muddy tracks, the tyre performed exceptionally well, providing driver confidence and unmatched traction and grip through the various terrains.
Getting to and from the Dargo Hotel, which would be the start and finish point for the trip, gave us the opportunity to run the G017’s on both wet and dry bitumen. They were sure footed and stable on the wet bitumen, an important measure as most 4WD’s spend a large amount of time on the black top in both wet and dry conditions.
The only let down on the tyres were the audible road noise from initial fitment. The noise level was comparable to the G003’s we fitted to the Monster Off Road Wheels Dodge Ram. Our recommendation is that if you are looking for an extreme all-terrain tyre and the noise on surface where you spend most of your time driving is a concern, stick with the G016.
In conclusion, the G017 provides the performance one would come to expect from Yokohama. The tyre that is well-suited for the challenging terrains and tracks in Australia. Its exceptional off-road performance, versatility, durability, and innovative features make it a reliable choice for adventure seekers and 4WD enthusiasts. Whether you're navigating through rocky trails, muddy tracks, or steep inclines, the Geolandar A/T XD G017 will provide the traction, grip, and durability you need to confidently tackle any off-road adventure.
