Rookie sensation Marcos Flack has taken Bob Jane T-Marts to a win in only his second-ever start in Carrera Cup during the opening round supporting the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.
Flack enjoyed a very impressive run at the Melbourne street track, qualifying on the front row of the grid before finishing fifth in Race 1, seventh in the second and capped it off with an impressive runner-up position in the finale.
That second place finish was later improved to first when winner Dale Wood was penalised for an on-track incident, handing Flack the race win.
“To come out in my second round and qualify on the front row as well as to leave with a podium, it's absolutely awesome," said Flack.
“I’m stoked. It wasn’t simple, but this weekend was really just about trying to find my feet and learn my way. To do what I did is just a great start.”
The second 'Pro' Bob Jane T-Marts entry of Angelo Mouzouris proved fast, but was not able to stitch together a result to reward his speed. The former Formula Ford champion qualified 12th, but was run wide in the opening race by another competitor to finish 18th. He came back to be 12th and right on the tail of the top 10 in the second. Mouzouris ended the weekend in 11th.
“Qualifying wasn't the best as I locked up the front left tyre and I started from 12th in both races,” said Mouzouris.
“Race 1, I had a bit of an issue with another competitor and got sent off, so we dropped back a couple car spots.
“In the second I made some positions up in addition to in the third, so can't complain. “It was a good weekend of learning and can't wait to go to Taupo.”
In the Pro-Am class, Rodney Jane made an impressive start, winning his class in Thursday's first race, He scored another podium place in the twilight of Race 2 as he finished the weekend in retirement after being an innocent party of an opening lap incident.
Jane said he had mixed feelings at the end of the racing.
“It was a weekend of many parts,” Jane reflected.
“Qualifying was pretty good. I think we were 0.4s off the fastest guy in Pro-Am
“I got a great start in Race 1 and the car handled beautifully, full credit to the Sonic team for setting up superbly as I finished first in Pro-Am.
“It was a really good outcome for me, probably the best I've had since I've been back.
“The next race I got a good start again, but got mixed up with a bit of shenanigans in the opening corners and at Turn 3 was where everyone went in various directions. We chipped away and ended the event third in Pro-Am.
“Race 3, we knew what we had to do and were looking forward to it. I had a cracker start and there was an incident ahead, which I made it through until someone hit me in the rear forcing me into Fabian (Coulthard).
“It was disappointing, but I got a call from Mick (Ritter) telling me to get to the podium and with a bit of talking to get in there, I stood on the podium third for Pro-Am.
“I guess I can't be upset about that.”
The next round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship will be the ITM Taupo SuperSprint in New Zealand on April 19-21.
